Based in a modern, bespoke factory in Kettering Venture Park, Northamptonshire, County Footwear (UK) Ltd is a manufacturer of orthopaedic footwear for the National Health Service. It provides a unique blend of traditional Northampton shoemaking skills and modern CAD/CAM technology to produce stylish, bespoke footwear solutions for patients with special needs, such as diabetics and people with rheumatoid arthritis.
The Company was founded in 1991, to design and manufacture innovative golf shoes which incorporated a biomechanical correction in the heel of the shoe to provide greater stability in the lower limb and increase the accuracy of the golf swing. The business expanded into comfort shoes and corporate footwear. With the migration of significant parts of the UK footwear industry to India and the Far East, County was no longer able to compete in these markets, and took the strategic decision to focus production on orthopaedic footwear for the NHS.
Rigorous research
County recognised that existing orthopaedic footwear was designed around clinical criteria and yet, to secure patient compliance, it was essential that the patients’ criteria for selection were identified. A two-year clinical study was initiated, in conjunction with the University of Salford, to define patient requirements, reassess their clinical needs and evaluate the level of acceptance of new footwear, designed to incorporate these findings. As a result, County has become one of the top orthopaedic manufacturers in the UK.
The Company currently employs more than 30 staff, all of whom are multi-skilled in shoemaking, and to ensure these skills endure, County has set up an apprenticeship scheme to encourage more men and women to learn the trade.
